How to Manage Mood Swings in our daily life?

What are mood swings?

Mood swings are rapid changes in humans' emotions based on their stress, mental health, and hormonal changes. Sometimes feeling happy, sometimes feeling sad, depressed, etc.

Are mood swings related to mental health? Yes, mood swings can affect mental health directly, causing confusion, stress, and difficulties in daily life.

How do you handle mood swings in everyday life?

Nowadays, mood swings are common due to the work pressure and family stress that we face in our day-to-day lives. There are several steps to handling mood swings. Let us see them one by one, as listed below.

Identifying Triggers:

We recommend observing ourselves in every situation to identify the triggers of mood swings. Being aware of our emotions is the root cause of our mood swings.

Analyzing the situation is important when you are facing mood swings. Mood swings can happen in any situation, like during interaction with co-workers, and family members, or sometimes due to weather conditions.

So the point is that mindfulness is required to analyse and observe situations whenever mood swings occur.

Usually, mood swings happen due to exhaustion or fatigue, loss of interest, irritations, an unhealthy diet, or an insufficient amount of sleep.

Being aware of internal triggers such as negative self-talk, unrealistic expectations, and too much perfectionism can keep you away from mood swings.

Sometimes the environment may cause irritation and trigger mood swings, like excessive noise or a high volume of lighting, which would affect the emotional state.

Social triggers are one of the symptoms of mood swings. Using social media for a large amount of time can cause FOMO (fear of missing out), anxiety, and affect self-esteem. Identifying triggers is the first step to overcoming mood swings.

Mental health management

Managing mental health helps to relieve mood swings. Practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, progressive relaxation, and deep breathing can improve the mood.

Will this only be able to sort out mood swings? No, practicing regularly is a habit that needs to be configured in our subconscious mind.

As we always say, “Consistency is the key to success." Consistently following a healthy habit makes you a better version of yourself.

Coming back to the topic, laughter is also a therapy that can be used to handle our emotions. Watching funny videos can elevate our brains to activate the hormone dopamine.

Dopamine is a happy hormone that is released when our happy activities are done. Keeping this in mind, disciplined happy activities are recommended to follow, like physical workouts, having fun with friends, and watching comedy videos.

Setting realistic goals

Be it professional or personal, setting a realistic goal is crucial. Working towards an unrealistic goal is similar to traveling in no way.

Unrealistic goals cause burnout, stress, anxiety, and depression. This alone would be the ideal reason for mood swings.

Assessing your starting point is the first step. Setting specific goals is the key to clarity. Clarity boosts our confidence to reach our destination or goal.

Being honest with yourself is important to overcome mood swings when you are working on certain goals. Measuring your progress could be a one-stop solution to identify the risks and output of your goals.

There are two types of goals: 1) Short-term and 2) Long-term goals. Identifying the short-term and long-term goals is necessary.

How do you achieve your realistic goals? Focus is the answer! Yes. Focusing on your priorities leads to achieving your goals and being relieved from mood swings.

While our mental stability and willpower are strong, anything can be achieved. Mood swings can fly away!

Prioritize your daily tasks according to their importance to avoid confusion. As we said before, clarity is important, either at work or in personal life.

Listing out all the tasks on a paper or sheet can help us understand the things to do and keep us ahead of mood swings.

Setting deadlines for important tasks and seeking support from the right person can also help us complete the tasks efficiently.

Being flexible is important during the process. Optimizing the goal according to the situation is more important to balance our emotions.

Lifestyle changes for emotional balance

Balancing the diet with nutritious foods is essential to managing mood swings. Practicing a regular diet keeps us healthy and balances our emotions correctly.

Drinking 1 to 2 liters of water daily can keep our guts healthy and help us attain glowing skin.

Processed food culture slowly comes into execution in our busy routine. Consuming junk foods like pizza and burgers has become a regular daily habit.

Eating once or twice a week will not make a difference in our emotions, but when it has become an addiction, it is highly recommended to avoid it.

Why? Because emotions can vary according to consumption, be it food or content!

Nowadays, safeguarding our emotions has become a challenging task. What we consume will reflect on our faces and say whether we are healthy or unhealthy.

Positive thinking is the most recommended habit to keep our mood swings in check. How? I will tell you that thinking positively enhances our mood and mental happiness.

Positive thinking means practical thinking and finding solutions in unexpected circumstances.

When I say positive thinking, quality sleep is required to trigger positive emotions. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule for 7 to 9 hours is recommended.

Sometimes, pampering is needed! What? Yes, pampering ourselves is required during critical situations. Self-care is an essential practice that needs to be taken care of by everyone.

Self-care activities like warm baths, massages, and listening to our favorite music soothe our minds and body.
